Sedgwick County, Kansas, is located in Kansas, and the county seat is Wichita, which is the most populated city in the state. As of the 2020 census, the population was 523,824, making it the second most populated county in the State. The county was named for John Sedgwick, the highest-ranking Union general killed during the Civil War. In 1803, the land mass that makes up Kansas was acquired by the United States as part of the Louisiana Purchase. In 1854, Kansas became the 34th state in the US.

Sedgwick County is known for being the setting for the murders committed by the BTK strangler from 1974 to 1991. Dennis Rader, an employee of Sedgwick County, was finally caught and is now being held in the El Dorado Correctional Facility. Also, Kansas is a Death Penalty State.

Sedgwick County is basically conservative and generally votes Republican. However, like most states, it does move off its conservative labels and votes Democratic.

Courthouse

The courthouse has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1971. The Building used to sport a 6-story clocktower that was destroyed in a windstorm in 1954. The courthouse is undergoing extensive renovation that began in 2022.

Felony Drug Court

Sedgwick County Drug Court Program is located at:
3803 E Harry Ste 121
Wichita, KS 97218
316-660-1740

The program began in 2008 and is a product of two decades of scientific research. There are 14 drug courts in Kansas, and each uses a non-adversarial approach; prosecution and defense attorneys promote public safety and protect the due process rights of the people in the program. The court itself is a specialty court with the responsibility to handle cases involving drugs using comprehensive supervision, drug testing, treatment services, and immediate sanctions and incentives. It is in partnership with the Department of Corrections and Comcare, plus the Office of the District Attorney and the Sheriff’s Office.

Abstinence is monitored by frequent, random alcohol and drug testing. Ongoing judicial interaction with each offender is essential for accountability purposes.

Sentencing is dependent on two primary factors: the severity level of the crime and the defendant’s criminal history.
